2019 – Updated Plans
2019 – 2020: Group/organization community language plans may be updated/changed on an ongoing basis as the Skátne Enionkwaió’ten Project Facilitators carry out their work in collaboration with community members in Kahnawà:ke.
November 2019: The Kahnawà:ke Education Center secured a second Aboriginal Languages Initiatives grant and hired two part-time Skátne Enionkwaió’ten project facilitators in November 2019: Kanontienentha Brass & Kanerahtontha Mahkewa. One of the primary roles of our two new facilitators will be to assist community schools, organizations, and community members to adjust and implement their plans to further Kahnawà:ke’s 5-Year strategic plan for language revitalization.
May 7, 2019: The Skátne Enionkwaió’ten advisory committee & Kahnawà:ke Education Center held an anniversary gathering in May 2019. All participants from our two planning sessions in 2017 & 2018 were invited back to share their progress and adjust their language plans.
2017 & 2018 – Original Language Plans
The majority of the participants invited to the community language planning sessions were representatives of schools, language programs, and organizations.
Community organizations were provided with a basic profile document as well as a planning document. It was clear at the first planning session that nearly every group/table present would need additional time to work on their planning documents, beyond session one. As a result, extensions were granted and the majority of session two was dedicated to completing and finalizing organizational language plans and community goals. The data analysis and drafting of this final language plan document occurred in the weeks after the second planning session with input from community organizations and the Steering Committee.
The following section provides an overview of each organization’s planning document that includes a snapshot of the organization/school, their language goals, challenges, and their point of focus for the next five years (based on the priority areas identified by the Steering Committee).
Each group or community organization also created a vision board at planning session one on November 23, 2017. Photos of the planning session including vision boards can be found on our Facebook page. Each group language plan also includes a small picture of their vision board. During the sessions, community members had an opportunity to view each other’s boards and make comments. The comments are also included in the language plan.
*K103 Radio and KSDPP were invited to the planning sessions but were unable to send representatives. At the request of K103, community members were asked to make suggestions about potential projects and programming that could help K103 continue to support language revitalization in Kahnawà:ke.
Note: These draft plans were prepared during community language planning sessions that took place in 2017 & 2018 and may not fully reflect the sentiments, intentions, or plans of the groups, schools and organizations listed here. Participants had a limited amount of time to work on these plans. Please keep in mind that these are provided for information only. Organizational and programming language planning began with Skátne Enionkwaió'ten but must continue moving forward and be integrated into the larger mission and strategic plans of each group. Plans may have been changed or updated starting in 2019.
Skátne Enionkwaió’ten community language planning is a community initiative that supports Indigenous language revitalization and language reclamation efforts (Onkwehonwehnéha / Kanien’kéha) in Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory.
