2019 – 2020October 2019: In the fall of 2019, Kahtehrón:ni Iris Stacey secured a second grant from the Aboriginal Languages Initiative (ALI) to support the implementation and development of the Five Year Strategic Plan for Language Revitalization in Kahnawà:ke. In October 2019, two part-time Project Facilitators were hired to begin working closely with community schools and organizations to help Kahnawà:ke reach our community language goals as outlined in our Five-Year Strategic Plan for Language Revitalization. Our Project Coordinator Wahéhshon Shiann Whitebean is currently an Educational Research Assistant on the Kahnawà:ke Education Center’s NETOLNEW Indigenous language revitalization project but continues her work on Skátne Enionkwaió’ten as a member of the steering committee. May 7, 2019: The Skátne Enionkwaió’ten Steering Committee & the Kahnawà:ke Education Center held a one-year anniversary gathering to follow up on the community language plan and provide an opportunity to community schools and organizations to review and update their plans. 2017 – 2018Our Project Leader Kahtehrón:ni Iris Stacey and the Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC) secured the Aboriginal Languages Initiatives (ALI) grant in the fall of 2017. Kahtehrón:ni formed the Steering Committee and then recruited the Community Language Plan Coordinator, Wahéhshon Shiann Whitebean. Wahéhshon began working on our Skátne Enionkwaió’ten initiative in late October 2017. Due to the fact that the grant was received 3 months later than anticipated, many aspects of the initial workplan and timeline had to be condensed in order to ensure that this initiative was a success. Timeline Community Language Planning Sessions Stakeholders were identified by the Steering Committee. Electronic and print invitations were sent/delivered to stakeholders including community organizations that were asked to send representatives. In addition, Wahéhshon and Kahtehrón:ni booked time on K103 Radio’s noon hour talk show (the week before each session) to promote the project and provide contact information for any community members at large that were interested in participating.
