Skátne Enionkwaió’ten community language planning began as a proposal by Kahtehrón:ni Iris Stacey. Kahtehrón:ni as the project leader along with the Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC) secured an Aboriginal Languages Initiatives (ALI) grant in the fall of 2017. Kahtehrón:ni formed the Steering Committee and then recruited the Community Language Plan Coordinator, Wahéhshon Shiann Whitebean.
Kahnawà:ke is closing in on nearly fifty years of continuous language revitalization efforts. This is the first time in that long history that we have initiated a community-wide 5-year strategic plan for language revitalization. This project brought together community stakeholders including language programs, teachers, students, Elders, youth, and community members-at-large for two all-day planning sessions.
A summary of the planning process and the results were released in a bilingual (Kanien’kéha & English) community language plan for 2018 – 2022.
When it was clear that we could not capture all of the information in the final language plan, our team decided to create this website. The website serves many purposes:
- To document this historic process which is only the beginning of strategic planning to revitalize Onkwehonwehnéha (Kanien’kéha)
- To provide Kahnawa’kehró:non access to information on Skátne Enionkwaió’ten activities and updates
- To share details about organizational plans and community input that were beyond the scope of the community language plan
- To inform and support Indigenous language revitalization efforts elsewhere
